Single Parenthood or A Response to Bachelor Weekend

Since Eric filled everyone in on what he's been up to, I figured I might as well also.

Here's a few musings on a couple of days of being a single parent albeit with grandparents coming off the bench in crucial moments.

Rest stops along highways are little miracles when it comes to changing a diaper somewhere other than a gas station's bathroom

If the award winning rest stop in Missouri could see the ones in Illinois, it would return it's award quickly.

Dominic really likes untying his shoes.

Dominic really doesn't like not having easy access to food/water/ditty (blanket)/ Mom.

Getting up at 6 AM in Eastern Time Zone, going to bed after midnight in Central Time Zone, and having a child who freaks out at 5:30 in the morning really shouldn't ever be mixed.

Dunkin' Donuts are the best.

Going to sleep at 9 is almost better :)!

We miss you Eric and are looking forward to seeing you on Saturday!

My Weekend

...and the most exciting thing is to catch up on Greek drama and the Wall Street Journal.

"Gate 14 doesn't think any one of the candidates is going to make their lives better."

The Cardinal Arinze webcast. It is decidedly not interesting to just listen to the cardinal talk to these people. It is VERY interesting to watch him. The good Cardinal is hilarious, actually, when describing pro-choicers: "Tell the senator, 'I am opposed to shooting all of the senators, all of the people in the congress... but if somebody else wanted to do it, well that's pro-choice, I have no problem with that." Or his idea for sending the Swiss Guard to arrest John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, etc etc etc.

"Take heart. Suffering, when it climbs highest, lasts but a little time" - Aeschylus. Read this line in The Greek Way, which has become a fascinating read this week. I first heard about it as the book RFK read after his brother was killed.

Go find the two explosions marked "attack," and then look at just about every other nuclear test ever done - and then think about what didn't happen.

Two options: turn on the weather channel, or flip a coin.

Mmm, yeah, I never worked this hard in AF ROTC.

From this morning's meditation in Magnificat: "Punishment... brings the sinner to contrition of heart... and thus the sinner puts aside his iniquities, if only for a short while, and seeks forgiveness for his sins." Said in the same tone as yesterday's In Conversation With God: "The worst Rosary is the one left unsaid," I found it to be a comforting statement about (my) spiritual life. St. Alphonsus Ligouri also encouraged me: "If you have many distractions at prayer, that prayer of yours may well be upsetting the devil a great deal." So that's nice.

Moon River just played on the iPod. I've got nothing to hide: I love Audrey's movies.

Benjamin Linus is... Beaker? (the joke is already old, but whatever...). LOST is back on Thursday!!!!

Before Liesel goes back to Kansas - again

In case you've been living under a rock, KU won the championship. Here we are in the moments following the exciting win over Memphis. Yes, I did drink most of the bottle myself - it was glorious. Oh yeah, my Mom was here for a week to see us Dominic. Hi Mom! She has good pictures on her photo album too.

We also filmed our ecstatic moment. Brad is our neighbor, and totally had more fun watching the game with us than with his wife Majelle.

You can probably see the KU flag leaning up against the door in the picture below. That's because the wind kept blowing so hard, it would pull the mount right off the wall. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Dominic entertains himself reading the book Grandma gave him about trucks.

Just my lovely bride making breakfast for us. The flowers are from the Dayton 2nd Street Market - where you can buy Ohio Maple Syrup and eat crepes made by a French woman.

Dominic earns his keep one morning this week.

We also know how to dance at our house. Be sure to turn up the speakers so you can hear the music ("Canned Heat," from Napolean Dynamite!!). Yes, Dom is really dancing!!

On to the random links part of the blog!!!

If anyone is reading now, know that I would really like to own these two CD's. I worked at Philmont for 3 summers, and heard these songs almost every night. I also know (knew?) the mandolin player from The Tennessee Boys.

Quin Snyder gets totally bashed on ESPN Page 2 today.

I don't know what the provisions of this bill were/are, but I'm sure it's something like requiring abortion clinics to meet basic health codes - requirements that, say, McDonalds or Wal-Mart have to keep; we call those "restrictions." When we try to make abortion clinics clean, or try to eliminate some of the shady, under-handed, cash-only, take-the-women-out-the-back-door-when-you're-done-with-them factors surrounding these places - people (Democrats/NARAL/pro-choicers/Kathleen Sebelius) call it endangering women. Riiiiiiiiiiiight. Just keeping this story out there for everybody.

I like AmP for his coverage on the Holy Father's trip to America. I didn't get much time to follow it while he was here, but these posts (here and here) are very cool. At some point I will also have to read what the Holy Father said during his trip - for now, I will be content with what he wore.

Once a month I go to a circle talk hosted by a member of Opus Dei, and during today's examination of conscience the question was asked: Do I waste others' time by my lack of punctuality? Phrasing it this way, and with a reference to the Seventh Commandment, really made me reflect on my attitude at work. If anyone reading this far also happens to be a junior officer, then you know what I mean.

Finally, our favorite show comes back on Thursday. In case you haven't watched every single episode in the last 2.5 months, you can catch up in less than 5 minutes:

"John is going to kill himself, but Walt shows up. Whoa."

"Gotta love Des."

Rock Chalk Nation Wakes Up (+ bonus links)

So much has happened in the last 14 hours... where to start? I agree with Tom Keegan & Ryan Greene that the hatchet is now buried between KU fans and Roy. We can remember those 15 years as a good thing.

BTW, as I'm writing, Dominic (who's supposed to be napping) is instead jumping in his crib and singing the tune about a Christmas Donkey... it's catchy.

If we were back in Lawrence with a lot of kids, i.e. we couldn't watch the game at a bar drinking beer, we probably would have watched the game at Allen Fieldhouse with this crowd. I bet they even bring out newspapers and jump and down & yell before the tipoff.

However, after the game was finished we probably would have made our way downtown to Mass St. and join the party -- which is easily, like, 1000 times bigger than it was last weekend when we were there:

At the other end of Mass St is where Liesel's parents were. We looked for them in 6News' coverage of the party, but couldn't see them. We did get a call from the Kaiser at 12 AM, when he told us that he'd had his beverage taken away by Lawrence's Finest - good thing we weren't quite asleep yet.

We TOTALLY have to give a shout out to all our friends who we called last night!! Michelle, Ann, Katie, Rick -- ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!!!!

Cole Aldrich is the most famous college basketball player in the world this morning because he got caught on film dunking on Psycho T - and this picture is on the cover of every newspaper in the world, or at least Dayton's.

I'm putting all those videos from 6News and YouTube in my favorites folder, you know, to plan ahead. Maybe I can make a cool highlight reel someday:

I can only imagine the run on championship stuff during the last 2 weeks. Did the bars on Mass St run out of beer again, or did they stock up extra just in case?

Last link: this is Dominic's new favorite Sesame Street video:

BONUS LINKS!!! (Thanks to Ryan Wood)
  • Roy "Choke" Williams strikes again
  • The Good, The Bad, The Jayhawks (DEFCON 1?! Great stuff!!)
  • True KU Blue
  • Take my breath away
Enjoy!!!

KU -- Final Four 2008

So, while we were in Kansas last weeked for Emily & Ben's most excellent wedding, we also happened to make time to watch the KU-Davidson game - the winner of which goes to the Final Four!!! KU of course won, so what do true Jayhawks do? Run to downtown Lawrence and honk their horns on Massachusetts Street for hours while fans spill into the streets. Which is what we did too.

Dominic was the young fan of the day! Although all the noise scared him, he still clapped and looked sort of happy. People even asked to take his picture!

Next morning at breakfast, Dom shows Nana how he clapped for the Jayhawks at the crazy party the night before.

rock chalk Jayhawk!! We've got a date with UNC -- and ROY!!!!
