Last February Eric told me he would like to give me a piano for my 30th birthday. And on my 30 + 7 month birthday, it arrived. Now we need to contact a tuner before I pass on my tone deafness to the boys.
We had been making due with this little number my mom gave Dom 4 years ago, but enough was enough...
The kids immediately took over the performance duties. As I sat playing little bits from memory, William looks at me and says : "Mommy, that's enough. It's my turn." And that is how it has been ever since. I did just receive some books I ordered today in the mail. I haven't sat and played this much in years. Dom was impressed, but my inability to play the Imperial March from the Star Wars left him a little disappointed.
In particular, I am looking forward to playing Christmas Carols and singing them with the boys. I did buy a book on ebay of Christmas Carols not realizing that it was aimed at beginners. That is okay, though. I won't have to practice much for that season now.

I'm getting back into reading your blog...and I'm loving it! I'm impressed how you can keep up with it.
Congrats on the arrival of the piano. We LOVE having a piano at our house and it has provided countless hours of entertainment for the kids and for us. Our playing level is firmly planted in the "beginner" level, so maybe this advice isn't needed...but we have really enjoyed a book called "Rise Up Singing" which has over 1,000 folk-y type songs. It doesn't provide sheet music, just chords, but if you have any play-by-ear ability, you can really figure out the tune and play so many songs just from having the basic chord sequence. Some of the content is a little shady, but for the most part it's great!
Also, on the subject of Christmas carols: try your hand at Advent Hymns! They are so, so beautiful and we have found a bunch of old sheet music (library books, mostly) and have gathered quite a collection. For our beginner ears, we hac to download iTunes versions of many of the songs just to have an idea of how they "should" sound on the piano (since sheet music reading isn't really a forte). I would be happy to email you my list of hymns if you're interested :)
Enough advice-giving for now. Have a great day!
I'm so jealous! I really want a piano. I'm happy the boys are getting a well rounded education :)
I expect full concerts and dueling pianos whenever I get to Ohio next.
