The week in Review (Saturday, March 17)

*Note:  I blog not only to let people know what is going on in our lives, but to also help me remember certain experiences.  The next few days of blog posts are more for that reason.  I hope you don't mind!

As I had mentioned earlier, we had quite a week.  Last Saturday, St. Patrick's Day, we awoke to a refrigerator with an internal temperature of 60 degrees.  Yup.  Since we had just replaced our washer, I was not thrilled with the prospect of either a high maintenance bill or an even higher replacement bill.  Luckily, a quick look on the internet pointed us to a relatively easy, albeit time consuming, solution.  We needed to defrost our freezer.  I selflessly volunteered to take Dom to his swim lesson while Eric began the necessary work of moving everything in our refrigerator to the deep freeze and coolers.  I even took Molly.

Upon our return, Eric meets me car side (never a good omen) to inquire as to exactly what I put down our garbage disposal.  In a manner which is very similar to William's self-preservation techniques, I denied any wrong doing.  After a rather long silence, Eric informed me that the kitchen sink was clogged.  Yup.  It was looking like a great day for the Buschelmans.  I was given a mission to find some styrofoam coolers and ice in order to cool the rest of our food and I quickly vacated the premises.  After going to 4 different places, I finally located my target.  I purchased three as well as three large bags of ice.  The girl ringing me up wanted to know what we were doing that night, which made me remember that it was St. Patrick's Day.  Her envy for my evening's plans quickly dissipated when I informed her that the coolers were for defrosting a malfunctioning fridge, not for a more traditional St. Patrick's Day celebration.

Once I made it home, I started to help with the removal of food.  The defrosting had gone smoothly and a plumber had been called.  Unfortunately, the plumber that our home warranty covers was out of town until Monday.  Not good enough.  So, we called a local man and paid him twice what we would have paid the other guy.  But, it's just money, right?

By 4 pm, we had a clean fridge with a temperature that was dropping, a trash can full of food that needed to be disposed of anyhow, a drain that was free of blockages, a slightly depleted checking account, and an adult beverage for each of us.

Oh, and what were the kids doing this whole time?  Playing with each other.  This is why I recommend having more than one child.  I don't think they would have missed us if they could get at the food a little easier, but it was all hidden in coolers....

And stories like this remind me why I still rent.
