Pi Day 2013

There are many reasons to celebrate such a wonderful day as Pi Day.  For me there are two huge reasons.  The first is that I love numbers and their relationships.  I get a ridiculous amount of joy out of walking by a clock and just happening to notice that it is 12:34, or 3:14, or any other random time that I can quickly relate to a pattern or arithmetic problem.  For whatever reason, I always like 3:43 because that is 7 cubed.  I also get pretty excited any time I see a palindrome or a team doubles the score of the other team in a game.  So a day like Pi Day means I get that feeling all day long.

The second reason, and perhaps even more important as I reflect on my laziness and procrastination, is that one can make just about any activity on Pi Day related to Pi.  For example, today just happened to be the day we put new tires on our car.  Tires are circular.  The circumference of a circle is 2 pi r.  Bam!!  Perfect Pi Day gift.  For breakfast the boys asked for Fruit Loops and Reeses Peanut Butter Puff cereal.  Circles and Spheres.  Bam!!  Perfect Pi Day breakfast with little effort on my part.

The conversation as I gave them cereal went like this:

Dom:  Can I have Fruit Loops?
Mom:  YES!!  Great Pi Day choice!!
Dom:  What is 'Pi'?
Mom:  Pi is a number that is used in all sorts of formulas including finding the circumference of a circle.
Dom: Oh (munch munch munch)
Will: (who has been eating spheres of peanut butter and cocoa) My cereal has balls, balls have circles,  I chose a good Pi Day cereal, too!
Mom: Absolutely!

Now, as typical of a daughter who is showing early the troubles she will bring to us in her teenage years, Molly chose Corn Chex for her breakfast cereal...

The rest of the day we filled with various normal activites, but I would bring up Pi whenever I found the opportunity.  We had Pizza Pie for lunch.  Eric and I discussed why the circumference of a tennis ball container is greater than the height of the container.  The answer?  Pi!  We watched the Jayhawks play a game using a spherical object.  And then I made an Apple Pie in my Pi Pie Plate.

Later I will make Circular Black Bean Quesadillas for my husband and I to enjoy during our weekly date night.  We'll probably also have guacamole and margaritas.  A lovely ending to a lovely day.  Happy Pi Day!

I tell all my friends that you celebrate Pi Day and I think it's cute and fantastic.....and a little crazy, but not really. It's something you're kids will remember doing when they get older.

I sent Pi cards to St. John teachers. Found out that the Middle School teacher made pie ---- not sure if it was for students or kids. I thought that was nice of her.
