Dom's birthday is coming up in a couple of months and I knew I wanted to give him the game Battleship. However, when Eric discovered a 50 cent version at the nearby thrift store, we elected to introduce the boys to the classic game early. And they've been playing it ever since:
It did not take them long to understand the basics of the game. It helped that I introduced them to a coloring project where they were given the directions for coloring in coordinates a few weeks ago. Dom noted the similarities. What they didn't quite grasp at first was that once a person got a hit, they should continue to isolate that position rather than shoot randomly into the abyss on their next turn.
At dinner on the first night of game play, Will discussed wanting to invent something that would allow him to see his opposition's ships and therefore shoot them without having to guess at their location. At the age of 5, he has invented the concept of radar. Will has also proven to be quite adept at placing his ships in strategically difficult places to be hit. Specifically, they are half off of the board (But, Dad, they still fit in the holes!). Eric discovered this after several missiles missed a battleship. On the up side, Will is not a liar as he most certainly had not moved his ship as Eric kept accusing him of doing.
Last night we walked in to find them each using the same strategy to locate their targets: A1, A2, A3, A4....
Now, Will had place most of his ships down in the far corner, whether on purpose or not, it did ensure his victory. This was also an improvement over his initial placement of ships where he put them all right next to each other in two parallel lines.
I dug out their ship hats for them to wear as they set up their next battle. They didn't even flinch, though I think they appreciated the costumes. As I walked away to grab the camera, I heard over and over: "I found the perfect hole". Who knows who will be the victor? But, I think I have time to go grab a nap while they are playing.
And one more shot. Eric found Dom's new baseball jersey for $1 at the same thrift store:
Pretty cool, huh?

Yup, pretty cool.
I love thrift shops! And I am also glad to see that the old table and chairs are serving the 3rd generation of this family's children!!
Being an old Navy guy, Grandpa Mac would be extremely proud of these two young sailors!
