Spontaneous post

I wanted to write down a couple of stories while I was thinking of them.
Right now John is napping and  Dom is reading for his 20 minutes ("Sports Camp'', if there was ever a title that sounded like something Dom would want to read it is "Sports Camp").  And Will and Molly are coloring  pictures of Jayhawks in preparation for the Big 12 tournament starting tomorrow.  Which brings me to the first story.  Dom has been counting down the days to when I would print off college logos so that he could have his bracket up and ready before the first tip-off.  I apparently at some point in the last few months had declared March 10th to be the day, and he held me to it.  He knows I don't particularly enjoy this task because it is not simply a case of looking up the logos and printing them off.  Not every college feels it is important to provide this resource for their young fans (KU, Oklahoma St., Iowa State, and K-State being the wonderful exceptions to the rule).  Every other college I had to google their logos and copy and paste window decals or outlines into a document that I then printed off for my sports loving son.  Why do I do this?  It is pretty out of character for a mom whose go to line is:  Get it yourself.  But, I do it because Dom loves sports in a way that is so contagious I find myself paying more attention to the other teams than I have ever done.  And when I surprised him by printing the pictures prior to the 3 pm deadline, he couldn't have been more complimentary or thankful.  He is so excited and if my printing these pictures off keeps him grateful and enthusiastic for just a little longer, I will do it every year....especially since I've wised up and actually saved the logos this year.

My second story is also sports related.  Last week, Will and our neighbor got into a heated argument over whether Will had been tagged out during a kickball game.  I did not see it and only saw the exchange of words afterwards.  I told Will he needed to drop it or come in...he did neither.  Until the argument got a bit more physical (rocks were held in menacing ways), and supper was conveniently ready.  After this event, Eric and I discussed with the boys that in a situation like that where neither party is giving in, there are really only two alternatives:  Drop it and continue to play, or take your ball and go home.  Although both Dom and Will excepted this reality, I could tell Will was not particularly happy about it.  He knew he was in!

Several days went by and tempers subsided and the boys played another game of kickball.  This time, Will came in full of energy and told me that it happened again.  He thought he was in and our neighbor declared him to be out.  So I asked what he chose to do.  Our young Will had found a third alternative:  Replay.  He said they did a replay and "You know, Mom?  He was right, I was out!".  I'm sure it was a slow replay at that and those are the times you can really see what happens.

I just read the story of Dominic Savio to the 5th graders. At one point he got in between 2 arguing boys, with rocks; held up a crucifix and told them that if they threw the rocks it would be Jesus and him that they hit. They dropped the rocks!

Just thought I'd throw this in the mix of options.
