I really should post more frequently. October was a pretty active month. The boys finished up their fantastic soccer season. Their team at the YMCA had 22 kids on it, so the coaches split them into two squads. Dom and Will were both placed on the same squad. It was pretty clear from the start that their squad did not have the same level as talent as the other. However, they had a winning season, only dropping two games. I was so impressed with how the season turned out. Even more so when we learned at the last game that the YMCA had not had a winning season in several years, and here they had two teams that had winning season (the other team only dropped 1 game). It was our first year that we got to see the team play as a team, not just have one or two kids take over and everyone else shuffle around the field.
John being comforted by his brother. These are the moments you love as a parent.
There have been a few occasions we have broken out the paint. #protip: break down a huge cardboard box and let them go to town!
Dom working on his muscles. He needs a bit of work, though I'm not judging. I can't do a push-up.
We had a lovely birthday with Dom. Eric had the week off for Fall Break which was nice. We didn't do anything particularly amazing, but Dom had a nice day which ended with pizza and cake. A story on that is that I accidentally ordered the pizza at our old pizza place in Florida. I didn't realize my error until Dom and I went to pick up the order. The people at the store were very sympathetic, called the other store to cancel the order and get a refund, and then gave me some deals on top of that. Plus, Dom and I learned about the Julian and Gregorian Calendars. So, in the end, it was a win!
On Friday of that week, we ventured up to Birmingham to visit the science museum. Our kids loved it, and I enjoyed having a second pair of eyes on the kids. Still lost Molly for a bit...twice. Also, John nearly went down a closed slide. But, all in all, it was a great visit and we hope to get back before we move.
Also in October, the boys participated in the Rain Gutter Regata. We need to practice for next year.
But, it was a fun competition al the same. While waiting for races, Molly, John, and I attended the nearby fall fest, complete with checkers and pumpkins.
Molly has loved being a part of American Heritage Girls. She became a full-fledge member in October. We have been very pleased with this troop and the activities she has been a part of. Hopefully, she will get to continue as we move from place to place!
When she isn't attending those meetings, she is accessorizing with my scarves. She caught a glimpse of this photo as I'm typing this and just ran to recreate the outfit. Wonderful! If memory serves me right, on this particular day she also offered to teach me how to look like a lady. I guess the hoodie and jeans just doesn't hack it!
A highlight for me in October was teaching the boys cribbage. You may not believe this, but they actually asked me to teach them the game. And even asked to play it several days in a row. I am thrilled with this turn of events and look forward to many evenings of card playing in my future.
Even if Will can beat me...
The above is one of a series of photos taken by J.E.A Buschelman. Most of the others are of a very fuzzy little boy.
We attended ACSC's Fall Fest, where the kids made out like bandits in the candy department. But, came up short in the costume competition. Probably should have come up with the costumes earlier than 30 minutes before showtime!
We experienced a bit of a cold snap in October, which forced us to break out some clothes the kids haven't seen in many months. John loved his pockets. We are still finding little toys stashed away from that day.
After showing the boys how to look up Bible verses for reflections, Will decided he wanted to read the Bible from cover to cover. He is currently taking a break. I need to check, but I don't believe he got out of Genesis. Though, he did give me daily updates for a while, it has been a while and he has moved on to Lord of the Rings series and The High King series.
Will on the day the weather took a dip. Finally, an excuse to wear his Ravenclaw scarf!
Molly, completely on her own, decided to go as my parents' dog, Tux. This was her first attempt at a costume.
The last weekend of October we headed to a pumpkin patch. John was so excited to get a hay ride. But, the favorite activity was to play in the corn pit. It took a while to convince him we needed to leave as the place was closing. Ah, three, the magical year!
Dom and Will discussing the play offs
This axe lasted less than a day. It has been repaired, but John doesn't get to play with it anymore.
I came into the corner and caught John sneaking a doughnut. #soproud
One of my more clever Halloween decorations. Dom and Will thought it was pretty good anyway.
Our crew on Halloween. A generic wizard, Tux, Mario, and Dom the Bomb (look closely, there is a fuse coming out of his head)
We called Nana to get information on Tux's paws, so please note the mismatched shoes. Molly really did most of this on her own. I did buy her the 'glittens' and the leggings (which she needed a new pair anyway), but it was her vision. And she did the ears and stomach cut-out herself.
We threw this together at the last minute. The beard is cobwebs. I was proud of that.
Couple of cool guys!
Ever since we knew we were coming to Maxwell, Eric has talked about trick or treating on base. The General traditionally gives out full size candy bars. Well, that General PCS'd prior to the holiday and the new one had not yet arrived. All the same, we had a fun evening walking around the historic homes. And then we hit a few more in our neighborhood. The kids had to actually ring the doorbells for the first time ever. In our neighborhood in Florida and on base, there are so many kids, people just set up in the driveway. It was a new experience, but they quickly got over any timidity. Candy was on the line!
Yup, John again. I really shouldn't let him have my phone. And I have cut back ever since he blew up a friend's phone with 'stickers' (he sent at least 100 separate messages), and called our church sacristan.
I think Molly was being punished...and John sat with her in solidarity. Pretty sure she was being punished for doing something to John, so...lesson learned?
Overall, our four kids had a pretty great October.
