Our family really never does anything. I originally intended for this post to just be Halloween and All Saints Day...and then I discovered other pictures on the camera. The last couple of weeks have actually been sort of busy.
One of the perks of the new house is that we can actually host a party. Our backyard is a pretty nice spot for old and young alike. So naturally, we went to the old standby for our first bonafide shindig in 3 years: Oktoberfest!
Dom provided some reading for anyone not up to speed on German culture.
It was a pretty great time with 13 adults and 13 kids. John enjoyed having easy access to food. I enjoyed giving him a bath later that evening. We had such a good time, I doubt it will be another 3 years before we do it again.
Liz let me know that there was a historic replica of a 16th century Spanish Galleon ship headed to Pensacola. Eric elected to take a day of leave so that we could go check it out as a family.
Molly and Will had a great time checking everything out. Dom was not as impressed. Particularly as he already knew that there was ice cream on the other side of the tour. I think he might have felt a little claustrophobic, too.
Molly shooting a cannon...not really.
Skeleton in the closet.
I took this picture specifically for Nana. I believe there are memorable stories of Grandpa Mac swabbing the poop deck during his time in the Navy.
There are no pictures of the kids steering the ship as that section was roped off. John simply viewed this as a challenge to get to the steering wheel. Luckily, his antics did not get us sent to the gang plank
I always enjoy seeing these sights with the kids. Will in particular will find interesting things to look at. I believe his two favorite aspects was looking through these holes to below deck and listening to the sailors speak English to the tourists and Spanish to one another. The fact they could speak both languages just amazed him. Apparently he does not hang out with L'Opa enough.
And then we had some overpriced ice cream, scared some pigeons, walked around historic Pensacola, yelled with fellow Royals' fans, and headed home to get some pumpkins. Eric and I enjoyed our family day, John enjoyed his ice cream, Molly enjoyed chasing pigeons and running all over a giant ship, but I believe the older boys' favorite aspect of the trip was listening to our audio CD of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Which leads into a story from our conversation over dinner the other night. Eric wanted to hear about the boys' day which included writing about the galleon. He asked Will to tell him something about the galleon and Will quickly replied: Oh, it's about 29 sickles. This was an incorrect reference to the money used in the wizarding world...but as he'd only heard the conversion once, we let that go and just thought it was a pretty clever remark from our 7-year-old.
And with that, I hear John is awake so I'll save Halloween and All Saints' for another day.

Grandpa Mac, no doubt, did swab a poop deck. And, I've always wondered where the expression "poop sheet" came from. Were there any references to a poop sheet on that poop deck?
I'm like Dom, I don't like small places either.
I enjoyed spending the last half hour with you...virtually. I keep reading all these things that your kids like that my kids like and I think it's a shame they don't get to play with each other more. For now, we'll just follow your adventures online. And I'll start checking more than every couple of months.
