First successful strike on Roe v. Wade

Today, our 5 Catholics on the Supreme Court upheld a Congressional ban on Partial Birth Abortion (if you don't know what that is, our priest friends can tell you) - this is the first successful legal challenge to abortion in 33 years!! Nellie Gray is probably having a field day with this - as, of course, are we. I've read through the text of the decision. The majority opinion is fine, but I already agreed with them. The real interesting stuff comes from the minority, with Justice Ginsberg writing:

"Some of us as individuals find abortion offensive to our most basic principles of morality, but that cannot control our decision. Our obligation is to define the liberty of all, not to mandate our own moral code."

I applaud the justices in the majority (Scalia, Alito, Kennedy, Roberts, Thomas) for obeying their consciences and following the teachings of Holy Mother Church (read all of it, its good)!!!

"If partial-birth abortion is banned in the United States by the House of Representatives (as everything seems to indicate it will be), we will be witnessing a true step ahead, not only of the culture of life, but also of a legal discipline more in tune with it that is rooted in a deeper understanding of the prerequisites of human dignity and in a more refined perception of the deep harmony between the right to life and the dignity of the woman."

To finish, let me tell you that I almost lost it when I read this, because it made me think of my own precious son: kicking, grabbing, crying, his beautiful fingers and toes, perfectly formed at 8:14 AM on 11 October 2006 when I met him for the first time. From the majority opinion:

“‘The baby’s little fingers were clasping and un-clasping, and his little feet were kicking. Then the doctor stuck the scissors in the back of his head, and the baby’s arms jerked out, like a startle reaction, like a flinch, like a baby does when he thinks he is going to fall. “‘The doctor opened up the scissors, stuck a high-powered suction tube into the opening, and sucked the baby’s brains out. Now the baby went completely limp. . . . “‘He cut the umbilical cord and delivered the placenta. He threw the baby in a pan, along with the placenta and the instruments he had just used.’”
