This year I asked if it would be possible to do a tree hunt a little earlier than usual so that we could take part in the festivities. My dad's secretary has moved to California, but a wonderful family friend lives out in the country and my parents asked if we could look on their property for a tree.
This turned out so much better than expected. In the old days we would look for a long time, get cold, lost, crabby, and eventually find a tree and take it back to decorate with cocoa and Christmas Carols.
However, this time, my parents' friends went out and scouted out the perfect tree for us and tied a string around it so that we would be guided to the exact spot. There were a few obstacles, like a barbed wire fence, fallen branches and uneven ground, but for the most part, it was an easy adventure to take five kids six and under on.
It was by far the easiest Christmas tree expedition. No one got lost, no one got cold (it was unseasonably warm), and no one got crabby. AND the tree did not fall off the roof of the car on the drive home. Though, Dad did say he had to readjust it at one point.
And here is the finished product. We weren't there to help decorate, but it looks just like I remember trees from the past.

We used to look for our Christmas trees as a family when I was young. I miss it. I'll admit that our fake one we pull out every year is much easier to deal with, though.
